DALLAS - In an effort to bolster American Airlines share of flightsover the Pacific, AMR CEO Gerard Arpey is in Tokyo trying to woo Japan Airlines into a more lucrative alliance.
JAL is already a codeshare partner with American in its OneWorld Alliance, but the Japanese airline faces serious financial problems.
Last week, Delta Airlines' CEO offered JAL $1 billion to sign up with the Atlanta based carrier's SkyTeam.
American and a private firm have a larger offer on the table.
Analysts said American stands to benefit more with a JAL partnership by increasing its share of Pacific traffic.
Arpey is meeting with Japanese government officials and will speak at a news conference in Tokyo at 2:30 a.m. Central Time (5:30 p.m. in Tokyo) on December 16.
