DENTON-- This football season you'll be able to enjoy a cold one while watching the MeanGreen take on opponents at Apogee Stadium.
TheUniversity ofNorthTexas announced through MeanGreenSports.com Thursday that beer will be sold at football games starting Sept. 6.
'We carefully studied all issues related to making beer available in Apogee Stadium, and from every angle it makes sense,' said UNT President Neal Smatresk. 'At [University of Nevada-Las Vegas], my experience was that selling beer helped to more carefully regulate alcohol consumption and encouraged more fans to watch the game in the stadium. It also cumulatively improved revenues and had no negative impact on the overall experience of all fans.'
SMU announced it will sell alcohol at its football games this fall as well. The University ofTexas,Texas Tech, UT Arlington, UT-El Paso, UT-SanAntonio and the University of Houston already serve beer at athletic events.
The alcoholic beverages will be sold in controlled areas away from the north end zone stands, which are designated for families, MeanGreenSports.com said.
Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal says the school has been discussing adding beer sales since the stadium was constructed.
'In a market where we are in constant competition for the consumers' entertainment dollar, we have to provide the amenities sport enthusiasts expect. With the addition of beer sales in the stadium, we will now offer what venues like AT&T Stadium and the American Airlines Center have provided from day one,' he said.
Villareal says UNT hopes alcohol sales will help boost ticket, food and merchandise sales at the stadium as well.
