FORT WORTH -- A new mixed-use development expected to break ground next year will likely be the site of the first Whole Foods grocery store in Fort Worth.

The proposed 63-acre project, developed by the Trademark Property Company, will be off Bryant Irvin Road, encompassing much of what is now the Lockheed Martin recreation area.

Plans call for restaurants, shopping, and eventually apartments in what is to be called the Waterside development.

But it is the attraction of a major grocer that local real estate agent Sandy Finkelstein said everyone in the area is talking about.

'To have a somewhat upscale grocer, it's very much a strong positive,' said Finkelstein, who is not involved with the development in question.

Sources at city hall and close to the development said Whole Foods has wanted to open a Fort Worth store for a while, and that the site in question fits their needs.

It is unclear just when the store would be built but documents are in place that indicate Waterside is the site.

Whole Foods Market Inc. told News 8 in a statement, 'We are anxiously awaiting the time when we can open our doors within the city limits of Ft. Worth.'

The company wouldn't elaborate on when or where that would be.

Some zoning issues remain with the larger Waterside project, but those are expected to be worked out early next year with the Fort Worth City Council.

Finkelstein said some of his neighbors were initially concerned about an influx of traffic, but that the opening of the Chislom Trail Parkway, also expected next year, will alleviate some of that.

Some of the Lockheed facilities are expected to remain, like the baseball diamonds. Developers will also work around an existing cemetery on the property.

'Trademark has presented information at more than a dozen neighborhood and citizen forums,' Trademark said in a statement about the larger project. 'We have received feedback and support and have made some modifications to ensure the quality of life in the neighborhood is enhanced.'
