SAN ANTONIO (AP) A San Antonio police officer was shot in the head and critically wounded before daybreak Sunday during a car chase involving what authorities said were armed robbery suspects.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus asked for prayers for the officer, whom he identified as Robert Deckard, 31, a seven-year veteran of the department. Deckard was in intensive care after surgery at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Two men were taken into custody after dawn Sunday in a rural area south of the city in neighboring Wilson County as police using tracking dogs and helicopters joined the hunt. Their names and details of their capture weren't immediately released.

There were few details about the shooting, but authorities believed the chase began after a store robbery early Sunday. The people in the vehicle took off and officers gave chase out of the city down Interstate 37. Eventually, gunfire was exchanged.

The officer crashed after he was hit with a bullet that went through his car's windshield.

Sgt. Marcial Luevano told the San Antonio Express-News that Deckard normally works in north San Antonio but was filling in on a shift on the city's south side.

Deckard is 'somebody I'd want to have cover for me,' Luevano said.

'All our prayers are with the family and him right now,' he said. 'Everybody is pretty upset about it.'
