DALLAS -- The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Thursday to allocate $4.5 million from 2008 bond funds to upgrade security for DISD schools.

Some improvements will be implemented immediately, and all upgrades will be initiated by the start of next school year.

The improvements include additional security cameras at secondary campuses and one-way observation portals in every portable classroom in the district. All DISD elementary schools will receive electronic door-strike buzzers, eight-camera digital recorder systems, and card-reader systems.

"The board should be commended for their actions tonight," said DISD Superintendent Mike Miles. "Student and staff safety is always our top priority, and this decision supports efforts to establish and maintain a positive learning environment."
