FORT WORTH, TX - Trevor Bayne has quickly become a fan favorite for NASCAR fans.
I think it's awesome, says Val Gillenwater, a NASCAR fan. I think he's got a great career and he's going to be around a long time.
He's going to help this sport, says NASCAR fan Cindy Chipman.
If he looks young, that's because he is. Bayne turned 20 on February 19th, one day before he won NASCAR's biggest race, the Daytona 500.
I'm really, really blessed, Bayne said as he was getting race in Texas this weekend. God did a lot of stuff there to help us win that race. It's cool to see it happen that early. I knew we could do it; we've got good enough cars, good enough people. I know I can do it, but for everything to come together that soon, was really unique.
No driver had ever won the Daytona 500 on their first try, but that's exactly what Bayne did. Was he lucky or he just that good?
I don't know, says NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. I've never seen anyone else go out in their second cup race and win the Daytona 500. It doesn't matter if it's luck or not, that kid has the trophy and he's looking at it every day when he's at home, so it's pretty cool to see a kid like that have luck like that.
He won the biggest race of the year, I m jealous, says NASCAR driver Brian Vickers. I haven't won a Daytona 500. I'd love to and he did a great job earning that victory. But if you re asking me to rate his driving talents based on one win at a super speedway, in restrictor plate drafting, you know it's a complete different race compared to anything else we do.
This year for the first time, NASCAR rules were changed so that drivers can accumulate points in only one series. So when Bayne won the Daytona 500, he chose not to take the Cup points and instead, chose to continue his efforts in the Nationwide series.
We're doing better in Nationwide than we're doing in Cup and I just think we needed another year of Nationwide experience, Bayne says. We're only scheduled to run 19 or 18 Cup races. Running parttime, you can't really run for a championship in Cup, so we figured Nationwide was the way to go.
One of those is Sprint Cup races takes place in Texas this weekend where he made his debut in that series last fall.
