DALLAS - Anyone who's had extended medical treatments knows how expensive it can be, especially if you're getting medical help in another city.
Thursday's Our Neighbor wants out-of-town patients to have peace of mind, especially when it comes to their housing situation.
The Ark House is a group of apartments available to patients who have come to Dallas to receive extended medical treatment. Patients like Johnnie Harper, of Midland, pay just $15 a day for a fully-furnished one bedroom apartment.
There are a lot of really good ministries out there, but this is one that no doubt comes at a time when people are at a real need, he said.
Patients must come from areas that are at least 35 miles outside of Dallas. They serve people out of state and even out of the country.
The Ark House found Mr. Harper and his wife, Jerita, an apartment just a couple of miles from the hospital.
Just having a place to take a shower, sleep and relax and collect my thoughts without anybody being around was very important to me, Mrs. Harper said.
The Ark House has rented 20 apartments at a Dallas apartment complex. They're always looking for a place that's safe, secure and tranquil. In addition, The non-profit organization is run completely by volunteers who have been serving patients for 25 years.
The groups hope is that the apartments and the volunteers will also serve as emotional support.
If you think of the Ark it was a shelter in a storm, and that's what we've strived to provide, said Katheryne Alexander, with the Ark House.
What began from a Sunday school class is stronger than ever and helping people when they are in need of some compassion.
Ark House has a great need for funding right now. They have a $180,000 yearly budget and strongly depend on donorship. If you would like to donate or if you know of a great person or organization we could feature as an Our Neighbor report, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
