IRVING Students at an Irving elementary were evacuated after smoke raised fears of a fire at the school Wednesday morning.
All students at Farine Elementary are reported to be OK, and walked to the Holy Trinity Church and The Sloan School after the elementary was evacuated.
The smoke was discovered at 9:30 a.m. on the southwest side of the school, and was the result of an electrical short in a vent hood, according to a release from Irving ISD.
'We just had smoke in the school as far as anyone saw,' said Billy Rudolph, a spokesman with Irving ISD. 'We got the students out as soon as we saw smoke. The sprinklers in the school went off. The fire department has been out and said, 'Yes, there was a fire on the campus.''
Crews worked to clean up water from the sprinklers and the Irving Fire Department gave the all clear at about 10:30 a.m., when students were allowed back into school.
Districts officials said the school would have a normal dismissal time.
The classrooms damaged by water should be fully functional by Monday morning.
