DALLAS -- An elderly felon confessed to arresting officers that he stabbed and killed an elderly neighbor Monday because the victim wore a red hat and placed a flower on his door, documents say.

The suspect, Joe Silva, 68, was involved in a disturbance around 11:55 p.m. in the lobby of the apartment complex, located in the 100 block of Juliette Fowler Street near the Junius Heights area of East Dallas. Silva is accused of stabbing the victim, identified as 73-year-old Harrell Griesenbeck.

According to a police affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News, Silva called 911 and told the dispatcher, "I just stabbed someone in the neck." When police arrived, they found blood in the front lobby. Officers followed a blood trail that led to hallway where Griesenbeck collapsed, the document says.

He was transported to Baylor Hospital, where he died. Silva was taken into custody inside his apartment and taken to Lew Sterrett Justice Center, where he is jailed on $500,000 bond for the murder charge.

According to the affidavit, Silva told arresting officers that he stabbed the man "because he put a flower on my door and tonight he had on a red hat so I decided I was going to kill him."

Silva has two prior convictions for aggravated assault in 1978 and another conviction for burglary of a habitation that same year, county records show.
