LA PORTE, Texas The Battleship Texas was the site of an emotional ceremony for 36 veterans Friday morning as they commemorated the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
The Texas was there off the beaches of Normandy for the historic invasion. This made the battleship a fitting location to give these World War II veterans the highest honor many of them will ever receive.
In honor of their service to the United States and in honor of their sacrifices to help liberate France from Nazi Germany 70 years ago these veterans were each presented the Medal of Chevalier in the French Order of the Legion of Honor.
The highest honor the French government can bestow. The Consul General of France did the honors.
The men were also each given a second medal one that contains grains of sand from Normandy Beach.
Howard Mills, who served on the Texas on D-Day openly wept when he received his medal. At 89 years old, he said D-DAY is a day no one should ever forget.
