A Grapevine man surrendered late Wednesday night after exchanging fire with police officers and surviving a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
Grapevine police officers were dispatched to the Cross Creek at Grapevine Ranch apartment complex in the 2700 block of North Grapevine Mills Blvd. at about 10:17 p.m.
Grapevine Sr. Ofc. Sam Shemwell said a family member called 911 to report that Jeremy Hovanec was going to harm himself. Shemwell did not release specifics of the threat.
When police arrived, they found Hovanec, 32, holed up inside a second-floor apartment unit. At some point, Hovanec fired a gun, Shemwell said. No police were injured, but they did return fire. The two officers have been placed on administrative leave. Shemwell said they have not been identified because of department policy.
Hovanec shot himself in the head and was still walking when he surrendered to police at 11:26 p.m., Shemwell said. He remains in critical condition.
