GRAPEVINE During the daily morning and evening rush hour, Highway 114 through Grapevine is one of the region's worst bottlenecks.
Starting Wednesday, traffic patterns will go through a dramatic change.
Construction is under way on the DFW Connector project to widen Highway 114, but the new lanes will not fit under existing highway overpasses like the one at Main Street.
So starting Wednesday and through the weekend, the overpass will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, the Main Street bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Workers will be tearing down the western side of the bridge so they can construct a new version to make room for the extra lanes of Highway 114.
To keep traffic moving, there will be detours for Highway 114 traffic that would ordinarily exit at Main Street. Westbound motorists will get off at Texan Trail; eastbound drivers will use the William D. Tate Avenue exit.
While things could get messy, the Main Street overpass will only be closed during the overnight hours.
The replacement bridge will be completed in 18 months; the eight-mile DFW Connector widening project is planned to be finished in 2014.
