FORT WORTH A woman and one of her two children were hit by an oncoming car as their vehicle sat parked next to the center barrier of West Loop 820 in Fort Worth.

The child was killed, as was a man in another vehicle.

The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m. Monday near the White Settlement Road exit, Fort Worth police said.

One of the children died at the scene, police said. The name of that victim was not released.

The second child and the woman went to a hospital for treatment.

Here's how it happened, according to Fort Worth police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Knight:

The 28-year-old woman driving a red Pontiac with her two children lost control of the car and it skidded across the freeway, hit a concrete barrier wall, and came to a stop in one of the northbound lanes.

Moments later, a man driving a silver Honda swerved to avoid the Pontiac in the driving lane, veered into the left shoulder and hit the concrete barrier head-on.

The woman and her two children got out of the car and were walking away from the accident scene on the shoulder of Loop 820 when the 22-year-old driver of a Chevrolet El Camino swerved to avoid the disabled Pontiac and hit the woman and one of her children.

The El Camino also crashed into the driver's side of the Honda, killing its driver, identified as 37-year-old Brent Moore of Fort Worth.

The man driving the El Camino was injured, but was expected to survive.

No other identities were released as of Monday evening.
