It's Memorial Day weekend. For most people, that means barbecue, an extra day off, or a chance to enjoy some really good mid-year sales, but it didn't start out that way.

We first called it "Decoration Day," A recognition of the fallen on both sides in the Civil War.

Over time, we began recognizing all the troops lost in defense of the country.

However, many have forgotten about the Blue Star Mothers, who have children serving in the military, and Gold Star Mothers, who lost a child in war. Just a handful still recognize them in September.

Fortunately, there are a few families who still make the trip to the cemetery to decorate military graves with flags, or pay special tribute in some form or fashion.

This weekend, take a moment to do something - anything - to remember the people who died so that you and your children might have a chance to do everything: shop, barbecue, even take a break from work.
