DALLAS -- Police are searching for a suspected car thief who may have been shot by an off-duty law enforcement officer overnight.

Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, the off-duty officer saw a person break the back window into his Hummer H3 in the 1400 block of Michigan Ave. in Cedar Crest. The officer fired several shots in the direction of the suspect, who got in a 2006 Chevy Impala and fled the scene. It is unclear if the suspect was hit by the shots.

The suspect lost control of the Impala and crashed into two cars a block away, got out of the vehicle, and continued to flee on foot. The suspect escaped, but is believed to have dropped a Texas Department of Corrections ID card.

Officers are searching the area for the suspect. If you have any information or see the suspect, do not approach. Call 911.
