WHITE SETTLEMENT A two-alarm fire roared through an apartment building in the 400 block of Ralph Street in this western Tarrant County community Sunday evening, leaving dozens of tenants homeless.
Twelve units at The Legacy apartments were damaged in the blaze, four of them seriously. The flames caused part of the roof of one building to collapse.
Investigators believe the fire originated in an upstairs unit. Eric Freeney and his family lived directly underneath
'They were beating on our door, knocking on our apartment door,'Freeney said. 'I just went to the door and opened it, and they were like, 'Hurry up! Get out! Get out! The house on top of you is on fire!''
There were no initial reports of serious injuries, but the White Settlement Fire Department asked the American Red Cross to assist families who have been displaced.
One firefighter who was said to have suffered from heat exhaustion was treated at the scene.
The complex has seven buildings and was built 46 years ago, according to tax records.
