LEWISVILLE A 4-alarm fire rapidly spread through an apartment complex near Interstate 35E Friday morning, destroying units but causing no injuries.

Lewisville Police Department Capt. Kevin Deaver said the emergency call came in at 5:25 a.m. from a resident in the Somerset Apartments at 256 E. Corporate Drive. The fire began in Building 17 and quickly spread to 18. When fire crews arrived, the fire was already burning strong enough to classify as four alarms.

Fire departments from The Colony, Carrollton and Flower Mound assisted Lewisville police and fire in battling the blaze. Red Cross officials are on scene to help any displaced residents, said spokeswoman Anita Foster. Twenty-two families were displaced by the fire.

"Working closely with the apartment management, Red Cross workers have ensured that each family will have a safe place to relocate," she wrote in a statement.

The nearly 40 displaced residence will receive monetary help to buy new shoes, clothing, groceries and other essential items.

Many witnesses at the complex said they were awoken either by the sound of fire alarms, sirens or someone banging on their door. There were no injuries.

At 8:15 a.m., the majority of the fire is doused, however firefighters are still rotating in and out to put out any remaining hot spots.

It's not clear what caused the fire, how much damage it did or how many residents were affected.
