One of the great voices of contemporary literature has fallen silent.

Legendary author and poet Maya Angelou died today at her home in North Carolina. She was 86.

She may be best known for her 1969 autobiography 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' which detailed her troubled upbringing.Angelou touched so many lives not just with her prose, but with her perspective on human nature.
