FORT WORTH The doors at the Community Food Bank in Fort Worth close at 2 p.m., but on Tuesday they stayed open late because turkey donations kept coming in.

'I sent an e-mail to my workers and said, 'We've got to help! We need turkeys,'' said Kim Comiskey of Hillwood Development. 'We have families that need to eat, so let's share.'

The fortunate responded to the food bank's call for more turkeys.

On Monday, hundreds of people stood in line for a turkey and all the trimmings, but some were turned away after the food bank ran out of frozen birds.

On Tuesday, no one went home without Thanksgiving's main course.

Walmart donated 600 turkeys. Other companies and families also stepped in to fill the need.

'I didn't have to look anybody else in the eye and tell them, 'I'm sorry, we don't have enough turkeys,'' said Community Food Bank executive director Regena Taylor.

Larry Smiley and his wife Shirley rolled up to the food bank hanging on a prayer.

'Without this turkey it would have been impossible,' Mr. Smiley said. 'We've been praying for one... we've been praying for one.'

Their turkey now sits defrosting in the kitchen in their home in Fort Worth's Stop Six neighborhood.

'I only get $81 in food stamps and she gets about $17, and that wouldn't buy a turkey,' Smiley said.

The family admits they don't have enough money every month to buy groceries. It has been a struggle this year.

They prayed for a turkey, not so much for them, but for their 17-year-old son.

'We want him to be thankful, even for the small things,' Shirley Smiley said.

The family doesn't know who donated their turkey, but they want him or her and every person who contributed to know they saved Thanksgiving.

'They have helped hundreds of people's Thanksgiving come alive,' Larry Smiley said. 'I hope they are overwhelmed with blessings.'

The Community Food Bank feeds 400 families nearly every day. It's also gearing up for its Christmas giveaway next month. If you would like to help, call 817-924-3333 for more information.
