McKINNEY Collin County prosecutors say McKinney chiropractor David Allen Russell is a predator who used his license as a doctor to betray his patients.
But Russell's attorney told jurors they should hear all the evidence before making up their minds.
The first salvos were fired Monday in what s expected to be a two-week trial. Russell is facing 13 sexual abuse charges involving five victims four of them are children; one is an adult.
A jury was selected Monday afternoon, followed by opening statements.
Prosecutor Shannon Miller told the jury that two girls at the Taylor Dance studio where Russell taught initially came forward with allegations of molestation in November 2011 after they talked with instructors.
Defense attorney Todd Shapiro argued there isn t any evidence that anyone was molested by Russell, who lost his license to practice after the allegations surfaced.
Shapiro claims the allegations came from a former dance instructor with an ax to grind, who was upset that Russell had taken over her classes at the studio.
The first witness to testify was McKinney police Detective Techia Davis, who investigated the case.
Russell, 44, faces multiple counts of indecency with a child sexual contact, sexual assault of a child, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault.
