More jobs are coming to Tarrant County with a decision by GE Transportation to move production of railroad locomotives and large trucks used in the mining industry to its facility in Fort Worth.

GE said the transfer scheduled to begin in October could impact almost 1,000 union workers in Erie, Pennsylvania, where those vehicles are currently built.

The company said the realignment does not necessarily mean that the same number of jobs will be available in North Texas as the work is shifted to the GE Manufacturing Solutions plant in Fort Worth "and other third-party suppliers."

"We understand the impact this may have on our employees and will seek to minimize it," the company said in a written statement.

GE said the shakeup is due, in part, to lower demand for coal which is mined using its products.
