An inmate at the Bedford Jail was found hanging inside his cell early Thursday afternoon.

The man, 31, was found slightly after noon when lunch was being served, Police Chief Roger Gibson said. Jailers provided first aid and paramedics responded before the man was transferred to Harris-HEB hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The man was brought in around 8 a.m. on outstanding DWI and possession of controlled substance warrants for both Dallas and Tarrant counties, Gibson said.

Bedford police and the Texas Department of Public Safety-Texas Rangers will be investigating. The Texas Rangers will be brought in for the case in order to avoid partiality in the investigation, Gibson said.

This was the first fatality Gibson had heard of since the jail transferred to its current location in 2000. The man has not been identified pending notification of his family.
