ELLIS COUNTY A single-engine plane crashed near Midlothian late Saturday afternoon, killing the pilot.

FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford confirmed the fatal crash happened at 4:40 p.m. at Mid-Way Regional Airport.

According to witnesses, the pilot was performing aerobatic maneuvers with a passenger over the runway when the home-built Steen Skybolt biplane crashed.

'For undetermined reasons, the plane crashed on the far west side of the airport,' said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper James Colunga.

Colunga said the airport was closed in the hours following the accident. He confirmed that the only casualty was the pilot.

'He must have been experienced, because he had a handmade plane,' Colunga said, adding that the victim was 'out of the Arlington area.' The pilot's name was not released, and cameras were not permitted near the crash scene.

Lunsford said FAA investigators were traveling to the site of the accident, and that the National Transportation Safety Board was expected to arrive on Sunday.
