PASADENA - Texas Head Coach Mack Brown never second guessed himself about calling a shuffle pass that Freshman Quarterback Garrett Gilbert had intercepted for a touchdown. The play allowed Alabama to storm ahead and take a 24-to-6 lead at the half.

We called a shovel pass that I had never seen intercepted before, and I certainly hadn t seen it intercepted for a touchdown, Brown said. We felt like we had great receivers and Garrett had a strong arm. We were at about the 40. So, we were going to try to run down 10 or 15 yards and then take a shot in the end zone. That s what we were trying to do.

Instead, Gilbert s shuffle pass to wide receiver D.J.Monroe was tipped by Alabama defensive end Brandon Deaderick. Marcell Dareus picked it off and broke free to score a touchdown. It was a deflating play as far as Texas fans were concerned because they headed to the locker room trailing by 18 points.

After the game, Brown was asked if he had considered letting the clock run out. We did, Brown said. We knew we were going to struggle with points and we felt like we had 15 seconds left so we called the safest thing.

As it turned out, the shuffle pass is anything but safe.
