MANSFIELD The 21-year-old charged with the murder of Texas Christian University senior Stewart Trese confessed in a jailhouse interview that he stabbed his friend to death in his apartment near campus during a fight.
David Hidalgo said Trese pulled a knife on him and threatened to kill him, but Hidalgo wrestled the weapon away and fatally stabbed him.
'I don't know what I can say, I took away their son,' he said from jail Thursday. 'I'm sorry. I didn't want it to come to this.'
David Hidalgo was arrested at John Peter Smith Hospital Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. In an interview from the Mansfield City Jail, Hidalgo said Trese invited him over to his apartment to look at something on Tuesday.
When he got there, Hidalgo said his friend made sexual advances toward him and became angry when he refused him. Trese pulled a pocketknife and threatened to kill Hidalgo, he said. The two began to struggle and fell to the floor. Hidalgo said he ended up on top of Trese and stabbed him multiple times in the chest and throat.
'He pulled out the knife and said, 'I'm gonna kill you,' he said, 'I'm gonna kill you,' and he came toward me with the knife and I grabbed his hand that the knife was in and I tried to wrestle it out from him,' Hidalgo said. 'We ended up on the floor and I ended up stabbing him in the chest and in the throat.'
'I didn't want it to come to that,' he said.
TCU police discovered Trese's body at 9:15 a.m. at the GrandMarc apartment complex in the 2800 block of Bowie Street. They initially released scant details, only saying there were signs of 'apparent trauma' and that an 'altercation had occurred between acquaintances.' The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has not revealed a cause of death.
'When he pulled that knife on me I was really scared, I thought he was going to kill me,' Hidalgo said. 'I really think he was going to.'
The school quickly sent out a memo saying the campus was not in danger.
Trese was a marketing major at TCU and involved in a Christian fraternity. School records show he was valedictorian at Hill School in Fort Worth.
