DALLAS - Fort Worth attorney Tom Sanchez, a Democratic candidate for Texas' 33rd Congressional District, came out on the attack against the incumbent on Friday.
He said 'mediocre' might best describe Congressman Marc Veasey's first term.
Sanchez made the comments Friday in a taping of WFAA-TV's Inside Texas Politics.
'The only thing I really know about him is that he's given a lot of money to Republicans,' responded U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey. 'He gave numerous donations to Newt Gingrich when Newt was running for president. He gave donations to Rick Perry when Rick Perry ran for president.'
OpenSecrets.org shows Sanchez did contribute to Republicans. He gave $500 to Rick Perry in 2011 and $1,250 to Newt Gingrich the same year.
Sanchez defended his political contributions after the taping, saying:
'I have contributed to presidential candidates who supported immigration reform to stop the hatred against the 33rd District,' Sanchez said in a statement to News 8. 'I am a Democrat. I believe in public service. I am inspired by John F. Kennedy. I will caucus with the Democrats. I look forward to representing the people of the 33rd District.'
The primary is 39 days away.
Congressman Veasey won his seat by 1,100 votes in a runoff two years ago against Dallas attorney Domingo Garcia.
Veasey is confident he'll win re-election.
But it's a difference that Sanchez is just as confident he can overcome.
