SOUTHLAKE Police are calling a deadly shooting Wednesday evening at Southlake Town Square a "well-orchestrated, deliberate attack" that does not point to the community being in danger.
"Based on the current information we have, I do not believe this incident to be a random act of violence," wrote Chief Steve Mylett in a Facebook post directed to Southlake residents. "While I cannot go into the specifics of the evidence we have in our possession, I do feel I have the responsibility as your Chief of Police to inform you that this was a well-orchestrated, deliberate attack on a specific individual."
A 43-year-old man was sitting in his Range Rover with his wife in the 100 block of Grand Avenue when he was shot shortly before 7 p.m. near the Victoria's Secret store, Mylett said. He said at least five shots were fired.
The victim was taken to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.
Two male suspects sped away in a white sport utility vehicle.
"We have reports that one suspect was wearing a mask at time of the shooting... multiple witnesses said the same thing," Chief Mylett said.
In a release issued Thursday morning, Mylett said the Drug Enforcement Agency, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have joined the investigation.
Police said they have not yet determined whether the men knew one another or if there was an argument before the shots were fired not far from Town Hall.
There are surveillance cameras in the vicinity, and the chief said investigators were reviewing those recordings for clues to the identity of the suspect. He also asked any witnesses who have not spoken with investigators to call Det. Karl Moore at 817.748.8127 or Tarrant County Crime Stoppers at 817.469.8477.
Shoppers and families were stunned by what happened in a parking place near the town square gazebo. Rachel Fowle said she had just been throwing pennies in the fountain with her children minutes before the shooting. When it happened, she said she was inside the nearby Victoria's Secret.
"Very shocked... very surprised for Southlake," she said.
The incident also sparked immediate reaction on social media sites.
"I work right down the road," Lauren Sukumar wrote on WFAA's Facebook page. "Didn't hear anything, but that is scary."
"I was parked in that parking spot where the man got shot in Southlake today just a few hours earlier," Courtney Saffell wrote on Twitter.
"Not even a week after Southlake was named the best suburb in DFW," added crystalbrownwilliams, also on Twitter.
This is believed to be the first murder in Southlake since at least 2000.
Southlake is one of the most affluent communities in the United States. Town Square opened in 1999 as an upscale shopping center.
