FORT WORTH A 1-alarm fire that started inside an insurance storefront at a Fort Worth strip mall spread to several neighboring businesses before dawn Thursday.

Fire crews arrived at the 6900 block of the South Freeway at Sycamore School Roadand saw heavy flames and smoke pouring from the Metro Insurance office. The flames had spread to surrounding businesses, including a day care facility and a convenience store.

Sherekahn Evans, co-owner of Hardhead Entertainment said he and several others were inside their business when the fire broke out.

Evans says he saw the smoke pouring into a recording booth and ran outside to learn more. When he saw the flames, he ran back inside to help everyone evacuate. Evans said the smoke was so thickhe could hardly see his hands in front of his face.

The Brilliant Minds Daycare was also damaged by the fire. Employees said crews are airing out the building and waiting for the electricity to be turned back on before determining whether the daycare will be open.

Fire crews were able to get the flames under control around 1:20 a.m. Arson investigators are now on the scene trying to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
