MESQUITE -- A Good Samaritan, following a driver he believed was drunk, was shot early Monday morning after the suspect stopped in a lane of traffic and fired at the following driver's vehicle 15 times.
At 1:08 a.m. a motorist traveling west on Interstate 30 approaching Interstate 635 called the Mesquite Police Department to report a vehicle he believed was being driven by an intoxicated person. The caller followed the suspect, Leonard Christopher Young, as he went south down 635.
Young, a mall security guard, stopped in a lane of LBJFreeway near Town East Boulevard, exited his vehicle with a handgun, and fired 15 shots at the caller's vehicle.
One round struck the caller in the back of the head.
The injured motorist was transported to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. Police said the victim was in good spirits and talking to investigators Monday.
After the incident, Young called Mesquite police and drove to the station to speak with officers. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and will be transferred to Dallas County jail Monday.
It is unclear if the suspect was intoxicated. We have reached out to Mesquite police to clarify.
