DALLAS -- Laura Bush and Barbara Bush are headlining a Dallas conference on first ladies.

Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will moderate a conversation with the former first ladies.

Other panels will include a discussion with historians on the influence of first ladies.

Laura Bush s chief of staff in the White House, Anita McBride, is chairing the Monday conference at Southern Methodist University. McBride says she hopes the conference helps people gain a broader understanding of the significance of this role.

The conference is a collaboration between the White House Historical Association, American University and the National Archives, which oversees presidential libraries.

Former President George W. Bush s library is being built at Southern Methodist.
