DALLAS - Cheryl Smith, a journalist and host of DFWiRadio.com, says there should be an overwhelming response of activism after four members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority have been targeted by a serial rapist.
I'm frustrated and I'm hurt, Smith said.
She is a member of the sorority and is getting calls from other journalists complaining some at Delta Sigma Theta headquarters in Washington, D.C. are telling members not to talk.
There's like a gag order that [has] been issued, Smith said. But if this were Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority or any other sorority or women's group, I would be screaming and hollering and making a lot of noise.
Smith said it is not enough for the organization to just put a release on its web site advising members to be cautious.
Let's offer a reward, Smith said. We have to do whatever we can to get this rapist off the streets.
Plano police released a video of a man somehow associated with the rape cases in Plano, Coppell and Corinth. Officers need the public's help in identifying him.
Smith feels the picture should be posted everywhere by police.
I think that the ball has been dropped on this totally, she said.
Officer David Tilley of the Plano police couldn't disagree more.
At this point, we're doing as much as we can, Tilley said. Our investigators are working on this just all day long.
The police told News 8 they have added more detectives from other departments while trying to solve the case. Police from the jurisdictions where the sexual assaults occurred are also patrolling neighborhoods where Delta Sigma Theta members live.
The information is on Crime Stoppers and a reward is being offered up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the Delta Sigma Theta serial rapist case.
