NEW ORLEANS Gunfire at a French Quarter hotel ended Sunday morning with one person dead and another person injured, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
The incident began at about 6:30 a.m. at the Westin Hotel, located in Canal Place near the foot of Canal Street. It ended at about 10 a.m.
Police received a call of a shot fired inside of a room on the 17th floor. When they investigated the scene, they found one person barricaded in a room on that floor.
After three hours of negotiations, police heard one more gunshot. They then broke through the door and found two people inside. One had been shot dead on the scene, and the second person also had a gunshot wound. Police did not identify either person, and they did not say where they had been shot.
Police say it's still too early to say which of the victims was the suspected shooter.
Neither person inside the hotel is from New Orleans. Police did not give any identifying information about either.
Several guests told WWL-TV that they had been asked to leave the hotel.
All guests except those staying on the 17th floor were allowed back in the building shortly after the SWAT operation ended.
All roadways around the hotel are now re-opened.
