SACHSE - Police in Sachse are reporting a custody dispute has turned into a murder/suicide.

Sashse police said the bodies of Karen Hayslett McCall, 43, and her 7-year-old son, Eryk McCall, were found inside a home in the 7100 block of Longmeadow. The father of the boy had won custody of the child Friday morning in a Collin County courtroom.

Police said a man called and said he had a court order to take Eryk McCall into custody. The man wanted police assistance with the exchange between him and the little boy s mother.

When the man knocked on the door around 11 a.m., police said they heard three shots from inside the home. Officers went into the home and found the woman and her son. Police believe the mother shot her 7-year-old and then shot herself.

It's a terribly, terribly sad, tragic event, said Sachse Police Chief Dennis Veach. When one person makes a life decision for another who doesn't have a vote in that decision.

Neighbors were shocked.

I have a great grandson a year younger [than Eryk,] said Joan Irek. It's just so tragic. He could have probably had a good life.

Eryk McCall was a second grader at Harry & Retha Tibbals Elementary School in Wylie ISD.

The district brought in extra counselors to help staff and students cope with grief.

We sent letters home with all the parents so that they would be aware, in case they heard their kids talking about it or if they had questions about it, said Ian Halperin, a district spokesperson.

Police said they have responded to several calls to the residence for what they called routine divorce matters. The couple was not divorced yet, but police said they had been going through a custody battle for more than a year.

If you want to end your own life, that's your [choice,] Irek said. But don't take the children.
