Because of the high-profile abortion debate, for the first time in a long time, lots of Texans paid attention to how the legislature works in Austin.

The idea of calling two special sessions raised a question for some: Why does the legislature only meet every other year, if it can't get its work done in the time it's given?

Texas, along with Montana, Nevada, and North Dakota, are the only states where the legislature meets every two years.
