An eight-year-old girl in North Texas visiting relatives was injured in an accident at the Frisco Freedom Fest on Friday night.
City spokesman Brad Merritt said the child fell about 20 feet from a zip line attraction at the Children's Expo during the Independence Day event at Frisco Square.
Melissa Bradbury of Frisco was there with her young daughter moments the girl came loose from her safety harness.
'All of a sudden I heard a commotion behind me and I turned around and people were just rushing to the zip line,' she said. 'Paramedics were rushing in, the police department, the fire department was running around in a mad scramble to get to her.'
The girl was taken by Frisco Fire Department paramedics to a nearby fire station for initial evaluation, and was then transported by CareFlite helicopter ambulance to a hospital for treatment. She was reported to be in stable condition on Saturday. The child's name was not released.
'I had goosebumps,' Bradbury said. 'I can't describe the feeling of having anybody especially a child fall from a zip line, and my heart just went out to her parents.'
Merritt said the zip line attraction, operated by Texas Entertainment Group, was closed following the incident, which remains under investigation.
'The mobile zip line is an adrenaline-packed experience for you and your guests,' the company says in a promotional page in the 'extreme sports' section of its website. 'Professional attendants are always includes [sic] with our zip line rentals pricing which guarantees a safe and thorough operation.'
- VIDEO: Mobile zip line
A promotional video shows mobile zip line patrons climbing a 28-foot tower, then using both hands to grab a bar attached to an inclined cable. They then leap from a platform and are propelled by gravity to a landing spot. All of the patrons depicted in the video appear to be wearing a safety harness designed to prevent falls.
Texas Entertainment Group was said to be cooperating with the probe. The company did not respond to a request for comment.
