BURLESON -- We have an answer Thursday on what killed hundreds of birds in one place at one time in Burleson last week.

Animal control officers collected more than 200 dead starlings and grackles. They died on and near the I-35W south service road at Alsbury Boulevard.

Preliminary tests by a veterinarian showed no food in their systems. But the city sent some of the bodies to a state lab to make sure there were no toxins.

Thursday scientists confirmed the birds did in fact die of starvation, unable to find food amid a string of bitterly cold days.
