A train struck an SUV carrying a family of five Thursday morning in the 1500 block of West Biddison, pushing the vehicle 200 feet down the tracks before coming to a stop.
The accident happened at 7:17 a.m. Fort Worth Fire Department spokeswoman Carol Jones said the mother and three children were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The husband was not transported for medical attention.
Nobody has been identified. The father, who was driving, told firefighters that the family was late and he tried to make it across the tracks before the train came. Jones said the lights at the train crossing were active and that the crossing arms were moving in a downward motion.
"He was trying to beat the train," she said. "That was one very lucky family."
The train was traveling at 25 miles per hour when it barreled into the SUV, pushing the vehicle 200 feet down the tracks before coming to a stop. She was unsure if the father was ticketed.
