IRVING An Irving Indepedent School District trustee accused of shoplifting items from a local Walmart has resigned from the board, according to a district spokeswoman.

About 6 a.m. Saturday, Norma C. Gonzales, 42, of Irving, was arrested after an employee called police saying she left a Walmart in the 1600 block of Market Place Boulevard in Irving with merchandise in her purse, a police report states.

Police said Gonzales set off the store's theft alarm as she exited.

An Irving police officer pulled her over in the 7800 block of MacArthur Boulevard and found items allegedly worth $184, including clothing, air fresheners, music CDs and bottles of cleaning solution.

Gonzales was released from the Irving Jail on bond.

Lesley Weaver, Irving ISD spokeswoman, said Monday that Gonzales submitted her resignation to Interim Superintendent Weldon Hafley and Board President Dr. Steven Jones on Monday.

Jones indicated that the board plans to fill the vacancy for the remainder of this year.
