SAGINAW Saginaw police Officer Andrew Peterson has resigned from the force in the wake of a January 26 incident at a Fort Worth hotel, police said.

Officers arrested him for public intoxication at the Radisson Hotel on Meacham Boulevard after a disturbance in the lobby. Witnesses said Peterson was abusive to the public, to Fort Worth police officers and to the staff at the city jail.

He was said to have used racial slurs.

Peterson's resignation is effective immediately. He had been on the force since August, 2012.

In a written statement, Saginaw police chief Roger Macon said Peterson's actions "failed to reflect the core values of the department, and he certainly did not live up to the department's motto of 'Excellence in Policing.'"

Saginaw police have now closed their internal investigation of Officer Peterson, but said that does not affect any criminal investigation being conducted by their Fort Worth colleagues.
