IRVING - The biggest question the Cowboys have this week is not how Tony Romo responds after a season-opening loss, but who will play cornerback?

We're so thin at the corner position right now and you really need guys to cover in the National Football League, said Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett.

Terence Newman's groin injury has apparently improved, but he's still not good enough to play.

If this was the Super Bowl this weekend, he'd be playing, said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. We would take the risk if we were at that juncture of the season, but with the full season, with where we are, we're giving it extra time. The facts are he could go.

Orlando Scandrick is definitely out with a high ankle sprain.

I'm optimistic, Scandrick said. As soon as I get out of this walking boot, I ll get to moving around and see how my ankle reacts. Then I ll have a better timetable when I ll be back.

Mike Jenkins is practicing with an assortment of injuries, including a neck and shoulder injury.

It's just something I have to get used to, Jenkins said. Those are the type of injuries that it's going to take a long time to rest.

What this means is that backup cornerbacks Alan Ball and Brian McCann have to be ready.

I know I have to give 110 percent every snap because I know any mistake that I do make, they're going to try and find it and try and capitalize on it, McCann said.

Ball agreed it was time to make the most of the opportunity.

It's one of those things in NFL football, Ball said. When your number is called, you've got to be ready for the opportunity to play. My number is called right now, so I definitely feel I ve got to step up and accept the challenge.

The Cowboys are so beat up and so thin at cornerback that they had to go out and find another player. They signed veteran Frank Walker, whom was recently cut by the Titans. Walker is about to start his ninth year in the league.

Walker played with Rob Ryan's brother Rex in Baltimore. He knows the system, so that should make the move to Dallas a little easier.

Well playing with [Rex Ryan] things are pretty much the same, Walker said. There is a lot of different terminology, so basically I have to study a lot and learn fast to pick up on the terminology.

Walker was also Jason Garrett's teammate in New York during the Dallas coach's last season with the Giants. Now Garrett is his boss.
