CONWAY, South Carolina Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry is cutting his busy day of campaigning short.

He was supposed to be speaking at Sen. Jim DeMint's Palmetto Freedom Forum in Columbia, South Carolina on Monday, but Perry said he needs to go home to Texas to deal with the wildfires raging in his state.

I had a couple more events in South Carolina I was scheduled to do, but I'm leaving directly from here and going back to Texas, Perry said. Our state has got wildfires running quite wild with zero containment right now and the winds are supposed to pick up again.

He was expected to leave right after making an appearance at a town hall meeting in Conway.

Keep those folks in your prayers, if you will, as we go back and try to get people out of harm's way, Perry said, adding: And pray for rain as well.

Five of Perry's GOP opponents are slated to speak at the forum, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.
