WFAA.com has learned that Jason Kidd will be replacing Lakers' guard Kobe Bryant this weekend on the NBA All-Star West Roster.
With all the great players in our league, I am honored the NBA selected me to play in the All-Star Game, said Kidd in a Mavericks press release. It is particularly special to play with my teammate Dirk Nowitzki in front of thousands of Mavericks fans.
Kobe Bryant missed his third consecutive game on Wednesday night with an ankle injury, making it appear at the time that the Lakers' franchise player would out this weekend in Dallas. Bryant has said he can t push off his left foot and he won t take the court unless he is healthy.
Bryant is only one of two players in the league to win the NBA All-Star game MVP award three-times. The other player to do it was Michael Jordan.
In eleven All-Star game appearances, the Laker has averaged over 18 points per game. He has been named to the West roster 12 times in his first 13 seasons.
Kidd will be making his 9th All-Star appearance. In his first eight appearances, Kidd averaged 7.8 points and 8.8 assists a game.
This marks the sixth time in Mavericks history the team has boasted multiple All-Stars (2007:Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard, 2003:Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, 2002: Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, 1988: James Donaldson and Mark Aguirre and 1987: Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguirre).
In 51 games, Kidd is averaging 9.3 points and a team-high 9.3 assists to go along with 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 36.0 minutes. He ranks fifth in the NBA in assists, eighth in steals and 32nd in double-doubles.
Also missing the All-Star game this weekend will be Allen Iverson. Iverson will be replaced with Knicks forward David Lee.
