A comment posted on the Facebook account of a new Keller Independent School District trustee is getting a lot of buzz on social media this weekend.
Place 5 representative Jo Lynn Haussmann offered this statement to voters in Southlake:
'Do you realize because SO FEW voters took the time and responsibility to VOTE in the municipal elections - YOU NOW HAVE A 'MUSLIM' on the City Council!!! What A SHAME!!!!'
Haussmann, 62, apparently deleted the post, but not before a reporter with WFAA media partner the Fort Worth Star-Telegram took a screen grab and tweeted it.
Shahid Shati replied to post via a Facebook message on his page.
'I do not pay much attention to such comments, as they are not a true reflection of this great society,' he wrote. 'The pilgrims came to the New World to escape religious persecution. After living in this country for over two decades, I continue to believe that the United States of America remains a beacon of hope for people all around the world who are persecuted for their race, religion, or ethnicity.'
Online reaction to Haussmann's post was swift. Julie Jasper said 'How Awful!' Sally S. Griggs said 'I voted for him,' referring to the Southlake Council member.
News 8 attempted to reach Haussman for comment on Saturday evening, but we have not received a response. On her campaign website, she refers to herself as a 'fiscally responsible' 'Christian Conservative.' Haussmann was sworn in as a Keller trustee on Thursday.
On Sunday, the school district released this statement:
'Keller ISD unequivocally embraces diversity, and the personal opinions posted to an individual's social media site are in no way a reflection of the district's beliefs, core values, or professional practices.'
