IRVING There was some ugly infighting Monday night at the Irving ISD board meeting as school trustees publicly reprimanded one of their own.
Trustee Valerie Jones laid out the case: "Children are no longer coming first when board members try to wrest control away from the superintendent and administrators where it legally belongs."
Her pointed criticism was directed at colleague Steven Jones. In a 4-3 vote, trustees censured Jones, saying he went outside his legal authority by directly dealing with school district employee matters on multiple occasions
The board now plans to formally ask the state to investigate Steven Jones.
He dismisses the whole thing as personal politics. "These attempts to assassinate my character with baseless allegations will not deter my determination to keep a strong hold on administrative spending and increasing student achievement," Jones said.
The censure is largely symbolic, but rare. In fact, this is the first time in the Irving school district's 104-year history that the board has censured one of its own trustees.
