A 24-year-old man drowned in an unsucessful attempt to save his 16-year-old nephew who had slipped under the water at Lake Worth Sunday evening.

The bodies of the two unnamed victims were recovered from the water by the Fort Worth Fire Department within an hour of the 7 p.m. incident off the shore of Arrow Park.

Fire department spokeswoman Carol Jones said Juan Zacarias and his nephew Javier Zacarias had been enjoying a family picnic when they went to wade in the shallow water.

The two did not anticipate a 12-foot dropoff about 75 yards from shore.

"A 16-year-old male slipped off that ledge, and being unable to swim, he began to panic," Jones said. "His 24-year-old uncle went in to help save him, and they did not resurface."

Neither victim was wearing a life jacket.

Jones said the family was "very devastated," and urged anyone enjoying the water on Labor day to remain vigilant.

"Be very careful," she said. "If you don't know the water, be sure you have some sort of flotation device with you."

Two men remain missing at Lewisville Lake after disappearing in separate incidents.
