DALLAS - A man died after he was able to exit his apartment where a small fire broke out early Friday morning at an East Dallas apartment.

Rescue crews were called to the scene of the fire just before 3 a.m. in the 5100 block of Bryan Street.

At the sight of the fire, neighbors pitched in to help extinguish the small blaze. They told police the man exited the residence asking for help, sat down and died.

"I thought he was fine," said Sean Collins, a neighbor. "Then he sat down in the chair and I was watching him and putting the flames out and he just started turning blue."

Dallas Fire-Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire, which appeared to have started on a mattress inside the home. The cause of the man's death is also under investigation.

The identity of the man was not released as of 6 a.m. Friday.
