DALLAS It's not just residents who are angry about a recent and dramatic spike in airport noise at Dallas Love Field.
Now the Dallas City Council wants answers.
Noise complaints are through the roof in parts of Dallas and Highland Park following a 131 percent increase in traffic on the east runway along Lemmon Avenue.
During the push to repeal the Wright Amendment, which reduces flight restrictions at Love Field, neighbors were promised no increase in noise.
But now that promise is in jeopardy, said Pat White, who leads the Love Field Citizens Action Committee.
This blowout on the east side is something we will need to be looking seriously at to fix as we move forward, White said while addressing the Dallas City Council on Wednesday. Because a deal's a deal.
She is referring to the negotiations that ended the Wright Amendment restrictions.
The city said the boom in east runway traffic is due to airport construction and the orientation of a new terminal, which makes it faster and more convenient to use that runway.
But even after construction is complete, the city said it cannot say whether noise levels will return to normal.
It's going to take some time for that to get sorted out as both the pilots and FAA, and the tower, work through how they're going to be getting that aircraft out, said Assistant City Manager A.C. Gonzalez.
The FAA told WFAA it cannot predict traffic patterns once construction in complete.
And Southwest Airlines could only tell us that its leadership is taking a hard look at what it can do to address the noise issue.
Council members like Angela Hunt are not impressed.
This is a problem, she said during Wednesday s session. We really do have to resolve the issue in relation to the flight patterns, because even though we have construction here, the pilots can do better. And our staff needs to make sure they do better.
This really doesn't sound acceptable, added Council member Ann Margolin.
Construction at Love Field continues for another 18 months, straining the promise of no new noise that neighbors secured during the Wright Amendment negotiations.
