BALCH SPRINGS Thirteen protesters were arrested outside of a Balch Springs Walmart Friday when they blocked the east and westbound lanes of the 12300 block of Lake June Road, police say.
The United Food and Commercial Workers protesters entered the crosswalk there at 9:30 a.m. and 'created a dangerous situation' for themselves and drivers, said Deputy Chief Paul Haber.
They were given a chance to move but did not so police moved in and made arrests, Haber said.
The individuals were issued tickets for blocking the roadway, a Class C misdemeanor.
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union helps stage protests at Walmart locations across the country in an effort to get the chain to boost wages for its lowest paid employees. David Tovar, a company spokesman, has decried the demonstrations as 'union-funded publicity stunts.'
In 2012, the union organized demonstrations at Walmarts throughout southern Dallas.
