A Mansfield woman was killed in what police are calling a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning.

Police spokesman Officer Thad Penkala said emergency dispatchers initially received a report about a missing woman after 23-year-old Jade Jiles disappeared from her boyfriend's residence.

Officers responding to the call found a person who turned out to be Jiles lying on the side of the road in the 1800 block of FM 1187, not far from Sheppard Elementary School.

Investigators identified a suspect vehicle and later arrested Philip Fugate, 44, of Rendon. He was jailed on charges of suspicion of intoxication manslaughter and accident involving injury or death, both of which are felonies.

Bond for Fugate was pending his arraignment, Penkala said.

Jiles' family said she had looking for her lost dog, Daisy, when she was hit.

Those relatives are now left to raise her six-month-old son Jacob.

"I want to be able to tell him that he had a beautiful mother... a beautiful mother," said Rick Carson, Jiles' father. "I hope to continue to give him the love that she showed him and be strong for him."

Jiles had been studying to be a teacher.
