Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their open head coach position, the Houston Chronicle reported on Sunday.

According to the Chronicle s John McClain, the Texans gave the Buccaneers permission to interview Phillips, which will reportedly happen on Friday.

Houston s defense has made a dramatic turnaround from 2010 in Phillips first season, ranking second in yards allowed per game.

When asked earlier this week, linebacker Brian Cushing said Phillips importance to the team can t be overstated.

He s been huge, Cushing said. For what he s done in turning this defense around has been unbelievable. So much credit goes to him, from scheme, to coaches he s brought to just the personality of the team.

Phillips has been a head coach at the NFL level three times. He went 16-16 as the Broncos head coach in 1993 and 1994, 29-19 as the Bills head coach from 1998-2000 and 34-22 as the Cowboys head coach from 2007-2010. He was also an interim head coach for four games with the Saints in 1985 and for three games with the Falcons in 2003.

The Texans, who beat Cincinnati 31-10 in the franchise s first-ever playoff game, will play the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round on Sunday at 12 p.m.
